Mi
Vida Loca

Publication Design + Print + Illustration

A publication based on the history of Cholos and Cholas, the subculture of Chicanos, and the ‘Chicanos of the world.’

As I was designing the publication, I wanted to be aware that some of the audience may not be familiar with the culture. As I kept that in mind while designing, I instilled ways to educate the audience who might want to take inspiration from the culture. There are ways to give tribute to the culture and ways to be inspired by the culture; however, I wanted to make it a priority for those reading that culture appropriation is a real thing, and there are ways to be aware of the issue,  and how they may still support and take inspiration without appropriating the culture.

The last spread in the publication, page 157, reads, “Esta es La Vida Loca,” and its direct translation, “This is the crazy life.”

An illustrated poster series that plays off the theme of holy and sinful. It plays on holy figures such as Jesus Christ, The Virgin Mary, and hands praying. Along with the violent lifestyle associated with “Mi Vida Loca.”

This publication has taught me how to educate through design and information, how to design for a specific community through layout and research, and, most importantly, personal experience.
